Ignatius on the bishop and the Church
Ignatius of Antioch · Letter to the Smyrnaeans 8.2
“Where the bishop is present, there let the multitude be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the catholic Church.”

Ignatius is warning churches against breakaway teachers and unauthorized gatherings. For him, unity around the bishop protects the visible unity of the local church.

It is one of the earliest uses of "catholic Church" and a major witness to early episcopal order.

Ignatius wrote seven letters on his way to be eaten by lions in Rome. Read them and the second-century church stops being abstract. He warns against early heretics, defends the bodily resurrection, and is the first writer to describe a single bishop leading a city's church — the model that became universal.
